History

About this graveyard

Known locally as Barrack Street and, until 1965, so styled in law, this is the older of the town's two Church of Ireland burial grounds. It is distinguished by a fine square stone bell-tower bearing the date 1700 on a stone in its eastern face. Documentary evidence records a church here in a partly ruinous state as early as 1615; a new church incorporating the tower was built in 1809 and served as the parish church until St. Mary's on Church Road was completed in 1860, after which the old building was dismantled but for a small standing section. The graveyard holds many eighteenth-century stones, the oldest a flat ground slab to Shusana Hean, dated to the 1750s.
