Kilbarron Abbey Graveyard

The old graveyard called 'Kilbarron Abbey', Barony of Lower Ormond, Co. Tipperary — in fact the ruins of the 15th-century parish church of the once-separate parish of Kilbarron, with an ancient graveslab (perhaps 10th-century) marking its early-Christian origins. 69 monuments were recorded; the numbering here runs 11–69 because the source page carrying Nos. 1–10 was missing from the digitised copy.

History

About this graveyard

Kilbarron, in Lower Ormond, is now part of the Catholic parish of Terryglass (an amalgamation of the three ancient parishes of Terryglass, Finnoe and Kilbarron). The most interesting of the parish's burial sites is the so-called 'Kilbarron Abbey' — designated an abbey on the 1840 Ordnance Survey, but really the surviving 15th-century parish church, with an ancient graveslab (perhaps as early as the 10th century) within it attesting to the early-Christian associations of the site. 69 inscribed monuments were recorded, the oldest a 1682 stone to the infant Elizabeth Cleborne and a 1684 Latin slab to William Cleborne of Ballycolletan. NOTE: the page bearing Nos. 1–10 is missing from the digitised PDF, so those ten stones await a complete copy. Recorded by Daniel Grace for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Lower Ormond (Section A, Volume 2), 1981.
