About this graveyard
Kilnaneave Graveyard, located in Kilnaneave, County Tipperary, Ireland, is a historic burial site reflecting the area's rich cultural and religious heritage. It features a blend of ancient and more recent gravestones, showcasing the continuity of local traditions. Nestled in the picturesque Tipperary countryside, the graveyard offers a peaceful setting for reflection and remembrance. It holds significance for the local community, preserving the memories of generations past.
Very little is known of the origins of this large graveyard. It holds the small remnants of the ruins of a church which, from the name Kilnaneave, was presumably dedicated to All the Saints; according to Gleeson it was one of the rectories of Tyone Abbey. Judging from the wide range of dates on the headstones, the ground has been in constant use from 1741 — the date on its oldest stone, that of Darby Kennedy — to the present day. Among its notable features is the great number of families buried here: some sixty-six surnames are recorded on the stones. Amongst them are William Kelly and Bridget Butler, the parents of Denis Kelly, Lord Bishop of Ross, and the grave of Lieut. Denis Carey of the North Tipperary Brigade, born at Templederry in 1897 and shot by British forces at Nenagh in November 1920. The graveyard lies in the modern parish of Templederry.
