Latteragh Graveyard

The ancient graveyard of Latteragh, Barony of Upper Ormond, Co. Tipperary — about eight miles from Nenagh, on the site of an important early monastery founded by St. Odhran (who died about 548). It holds 57 headstones, among them the weathered monument to Sir John Morres of Knockagh, Baronet (born 1620, died 1720), of the Norman De Marisco/Morres family whose castle stood across the road. History

About this graveyard

Latteragh graveyard lies less than a mile to the north-east of the main Nenagh–Thurles road, about eight miles from Nenagh, on the site of an important monastery founded by St. Odhran, who died — probably of plague — about 548 AD; in the early Christian period there may have been up to 3,000 scholars here, and St. Odhran is still remembered by his Holy Well nearby. Three early cross-slabs dug up in the graveyard have been dated to the 8th or 9th centuries; the church ruins are 12th-century, when Latteragh became a parish. A Norman castle nearby was held by the De Marisco or Morres family — the monument to Sir John Morres of Knockagh (b. 1620, d. 1720) and Lady Morres survives, weathered — and O'Sullivan Bere is said to have taken refuge in Latteragh church in January 1603 on his march north. The graveyard, now in the parish of Templederry, holds 57 headstones, all copied. Recorded by Denise Foulkes and Daniel Grace for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Upper Ormond (Section B, Volume 6), 1983.
