Loughkeen Graveyard
The graveyard of Loughkeen parish, Barony of Lower Ormond, on the old Birr road from Nenagh some three and a half miles before the village of Riverstown. The Church of Ireland church (Riverston) stands within it, with a neat section around the church and a sprawling overgrown older part beyond. The oldest stone is to Mrs. Mary Comerford (died 1733), and the graveyard is notable for the many young children it commemorates. To the right of the church stands a stone replica of the Victoria Cross won by Colonel Thomas Bernard Hackett of Riverston at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857.

History
About this graveyard
Loughkeen is a parish of about 8,000 acres in the Barony of Lower Ormond, lying on the old Birr road from Nenagh some three and a half miles before the village of Riverstown. Before the Cromwellian confiscations the Manor and Lordship of Lackagh here was held by Elizabeth Butler, Countess of Ormond, granddaughter of Thomas Butler (Black Tom), 10th Earl of Ormond, and wife of James Butler, 12th Earl and 1st Duke of Ormonde. In the Church of Ireland it is part of the Birr Union, and it is part of the Catholic parish of Birr–Carrig. The Church of Ireland church within the graveyard was built in the early 19th century; the ground is in two sections, a neatly laid-out area around the church and a sprawling, overgrown older section beyond. To the right of the church stands a large stone replica of the Victoria Cross won by Colonel (then Lieutenant) Thomas Bernard Hackett for deeds of bravery at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857 — he was accidentally shot in 1880 while shooting partridge. The oldest headstone is to Mrs. Mary Comerford, who died in 1733; the graveyard is unusual for the number of young children commemorated. Recorded — 142 yard stones and 8 memorials within the church — for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Lower Ormond (Section A, Volume 15).

How loved, how honoured once avails thee not, To whom related or by whom begot, An heap of dirt alone remains of thee, Its all thou art all the proud shall be. (Odd stone in graveyard, no name attached).
