St. Kieran's Graveyard, Modreeny
The graveyard adjoining the Church of Ireland church at Modreeny, Barony of Lower Ormond, Co. Tipperary — about two miles from Cloughjordan on the Borrisokane road. The church was built in 1822 in the grounds of the ancient church of St. Kieran, made a place of pilgrimage by Pope Paul V in 1607. Used by all denominations; many of the original Cromwellian planters are buried here, and the earliest headstone (Elizabeth Harrison, 1689) reflects that. Among the church memorials is the altar plaque to Sergeant James Somers V.C. of Gallipoli.

About this graveyard
St. Kieran's Church of Ireland church at Modreeny stands about two miles from Cloughjordan on the Borrisokane road, built in 1822 in the grounds of the ancient church of St. Kieran — of which only the northern gable and a small portion of side wall remain — designated a special place of pilgrimage by Pope Paul V in 1607. The graveyard is used by all denominations, with a modern extension outside the older walls. Many of the original Cromwellian planters are buried here, including John Harrison and his wife Elizabeth (hers the earliest headstone, 1689, closely followed by Thomas Trench, 1690), together with a Penal-days priest, Fr. Darby Egan (d. 1747), and many of the Protestant clergymen and Methodist ministers who laboured in the region. Among the memorials within the church is one to Sergeant James Somers, who won the Victoria Cross in the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War, and a window to the Ireland brothers. Recorded by Daniel Grace, Denise Foulkes and Rosarie Mullane for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Lower Ormond (Section A, Volume 8), published 1984.
