History
About this graveyard
The handsome Catholic church stands just outside Terryglass village; its pedigree is recorded on a plaque on the outside wall: the foundation stone, quarried near the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, was laid 19 Aug. 1880, the church having been commenced 25 Nov. 1879, blessed and opened 15 Aug. 1886, and consecrated 27 June 1910, on the site of a penal-days Mass rock. Daniel O'Connell of Derrynane Abbey, Co. Kerry, was architect; Martin Costello of Kyle, Ballinderry, clerk of works; and James Griffin of Tirdhaghlas, foreman carpenter. The tower and spire were completed by the children of the founders and dedicated by the Most Rev. Michael Fogarty, D.D., Lord Bishop of Killaloe, on 8 Dec. 1929. The large adjoining graveyard is laid out with almost military precision and its headstones, all modern and identical, were not transcribed — only the memorials of the co-founders (the Hickie and Larios families) and a number of parish priests, some reinterred here. Recorded by Denise Foulkes for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Lower Ormond (Section A, Volume 12), published 1985.
