History

About this graveyard

One of the three historic burial grounds of the civil parish of Nenagh — with Kenyon Street and the Franciscan Friary — Tyone lies in the Barony of Upper Ormond. The graveyard, nearly an acre in extent, occupies the grounds of what was once an extensive thirteenth-century Augustinian monastery, a good portion of whose church still stands; there are few enough inscribed stones in the church ruin itself. The oldest legible stone in the ground is that of Thomas Cunningham, “an upright man,” who died in 1814; the next oldest, of 1827, commemorates Dan Gleeson, an attorney at law “talented and high in his profession” though only 33 when he died. Among many Nenagh families buried here is Tipperary North Riding’s first County Manager, John P. Flynn, who died in 1974 aged 76.
