Youghalarra Graveyard
The old graveyard of Youghalarra, in the townland of Youghal on an elevated site about a mile from Newtown village, Barony of Owney and Arra. It holds the walls of a ruined church — probably a 15th-century rebuilding of an earlier one — bearing a carved head and an inscription to the parish patron St. Coelan (Coonlaun). Some fine early slate headstones by local sculptors survive here; the oldest dates from 1700.

History
About this graveyard
Youghalarra graveyard lies in the townland of Youghal, on an elevated site about a mile from Newtown village in the Barony of Owney and Arra. In it stand the walls of a ruined church, roughly 73ft by 22ft, probably a fifteenth-century reconstruction of an earlier building; a stone in the south wall carries a carved human head and an inscription naming the parish patron, St. Coelan or Coonlaun (with the date 433, which — if a year of death — would make him a pre-Patrician saint). Like nearby Castletown, the graveyard holds some good examples of the art of the early stone-sculptors, worked on slate from local quarries. The most predominant family names are Hogan, Brien/O'Brien, Ryan, McGrath and Hayes. The earliest gravestone found was that of Loghlin Hogan, who died in 1700; 192 headstones were transcribed here. Recorded for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Owney and Arra by Robert Bonfield in 1983. (A separate small burial site, Youghalarra Church Graveyard in the parish-church grounds at Newtown, is recorded in the same volume but held apart.)
