Youghalarra Church Graveyard

The Catholic parish church at Newtown, in the civil parish of Youghalarra, Barony of Owney and Arra, Co. Tipperary. The present church was erected in 1832 by Father Daniel Ryan on the site of an earlier church destroyed by fire, and its memorials — wall plaques, a baptismal font, a window and a confessional — are dedicated almost entirely to priests of the parish of Youghalarra and Burgess.

About this graveyard

The present parish church at Newtown was erected in 1832 by Father Daniel Ryan, P.P., built on the site of an earlier church that had been accidentally destroyed by fire. On the south wall of the church is a baptismal font which appears to have been taken from the original old church at Youghalarra. Almost all of the church's memorials are dedicated to priests of the parish — among them Rev. Daniel Ryan (d. 1840), by whose exertions the church was built, and the Most Rev. James Ryan, Coadjutor Bishop of Killaloe. The memorials were recorded, together with the old Youghalarra graveyard a mile to the west, by Robert Bonfield for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Owney and Arra (Section C, Volume 2), published 1983. A short distance past Newtown village stands the former Protestant church — built as a school in 1841, later used as a church until the 1920s, and now a private dwelling — around which there are no burials.
