Ballymackey Graveyard

The graveyard at Ballymackey (townland of Cloonmore), signposted off the main Nenagh–Toomevara road some five or six miles from Nenagh, Barony of Upper Ormond. It has two parts: a modern section around the Church of Ireland church — built in 1820 on land donated by Henry C. Bowen, replacing a church of 1716 that was storm-damaged in 1814 — and a large, older and poorer section beside it. Among the 152 recorded stones (the earliest from 1728) are the Tolers of Beechwood, family of the Earl of Norbury, and the Rev. Michael Philpott, rector for nearly forty years.

About this graveyard

Ballymackey graveyard stands in the village of Ballymackey (townland of Cloonmore), signposted off the main Nenagh–Toomevara road about five or six miles from Nenagh, in the Barony of Upper Ormond. It is in two distinct sections: a modern part surrounding the Church of Ireland church, and a large, sprawling older section beside it, uneven and overgrown. The present church, built in 1820 on land donated by Henry C. Bowen, replaced an earlier church that stood in the older churchyard — the Vestry records show a church here in 1716, badly damaged in a storm in December 1814. A number of headstones date from the 1700s, the earliest being 1728. Among the monuments of interest are those of the Tolers of Beechwood, the family of the Earl of Norbury; the Rev. Michael Philpott, rector for nearly forty years (his signature legible on the Vestry records from 1753 to his death in 1798); and several war dead. Recorded — the yard stones, eleven memorials inside the church, and one inscription (to Anne, Lady Cole, d. 1716) noted by Dwyer's 'Diocese of Killaloe' but not located — by Denise Foulkes and Daniel Grace for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Upper Ormond (Section B, Volume 8), 1984.
