About this graveyard
The Catholic church of St. Mary at Carrig was built in 1833, when Father Joseph Downes was Parish Priest, to a design by the architect John Hanly. After extensive renovations it was solemnly re-consecrated on its sesquicentenary, 13th June 1983, by the Most Reverend Michael A. Harty, D.D., Bishop of Killaloe. Recorded here are the memorials set within the church itself — to the priests who served the parish and to a few local families — transcribed for the Ormond Historical Society's survey of the Barony of Lower Ormond by Daniel Grace and Denise Foulkes in 1986.

Rev. Joseph Downes
1844
Sacred to the memory of the Revd. Joseph Downes for 14 years Pastor of the united parishes of Monsea and Killodiernan. Throughout a long and active life he laboured zealously in the sacred ministry. This splendid chapel and several others erected by him remain as lasting monuments of his piety and striking proofs of the desire which he evinced to promote the honour and glory of his Devine Master. He departed this life on the 13th day of March 1844 in the 75th year of his age. At his special request, this monument is erected to solicit the prayers of the faithful for the eternal repose of his soul. May he rest in peace. (Wilm Harding, Nenagh, Facit).

Erected by the people of this parish in dear and loving memory of the very Rev. Patrick Canon O'Meara for 21 years P.P. Cloughprior and Monsea who died on 13th March 1927, aged 78 years and who should never be forgotten because of his love for the people and sympathy for the poor. "As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren you did it to me", Matt. XXV 40.

To the greater honour and glory of God, this altar is erected by Mrs. Nora Slattery Lefebure of Hogan's Pass to the memory of her father and mother.
