History
About this graveyard
One of the three historic burial grounds of the civil parish of Nenagh, in the Barony of Lower Ormond, this graveyard lies within the remaining ruins of what was once an important thirteenth-century Franciscan foundation. Unlike Tyone, at least half of the inscribed stones are within the church ruin. The ground underwent a major clean-up and conservation programme in 1986–8 by members of an AnCO Community Youth Training Programme, sponsored by Nenagh Tidy Towns Committee and the Abbey Burial Ground Committee. The oldest inscribed stone is that of Mrs Frances Minchin, widow of Major Valentine Power of Waterford, who died in 1696; the next oldest, of 1722, marks the grave of a nine-year-old child, Francis Egan. Among those remembered here are Captain Archibald McDonnell of the Glengarry Fencible Regiment (drawn from the Western Isles of Scotland and stationed in Nenagh after the 1798 Rebellion), Hannah O'Meara, accidentally shot during the Civil War in 1922, and Paddy Kenny of the League of Youth, who “gave his life for Ireland” in 1934.
