Stories in Stone
Military
War reached even a quiet Ormond parish, and it reached it from every side. Gathered here are the graves of all who bore a military connection — the men who fell in foreign fields in the Great War and the Second World War and were never brought home, the soldiers of the Crown's regiments who lie in war graves among their own, and the decorated few who served and came back; and alongside them the Volunteers of the Irish Republican Army and Fianna Éireann, most barely past twenty, killed by Crown forces in the War of Independence or lost in the Civil War that followed. Some of their stones name a regiment and a rank in English, others speak in Irish, raised by old comrades — but read together they are one town's remembrance of those who answered the call to arms, whatever flag they answered it under.
